What It’s Like to Hack Simon

What It’s Like to Hack Simon

More than one equestrian blogger has hopped on Sir Simon pants, but most of y’all can just imagine his epicness. If you’ve ever been curious about the entire nerd horse experience, wonder no more! You hop on, and enter the ring with loose reins. Might I suggest a casual power walk? It is a lovely night for a power walk. You walk a lap around the ring with loose reins, letting Simon stretch out a bit. Happy happy happy happy…

Horses vs Dogs

Horses vs Dogs

When I had coffee with a coworker last week, I joked that my horse was the most stable relationship in my life right now. “Yeah,” he said, ignoring my crazy. “I didn’t realize that horses’s had personality. They’re just like big dogs!” “Well…” I started. “They do have personality, but I don’t think of them like dogs. A dog is always going to love you, but a horse is more like being married.” He blinked at me. See? You can’t…

Muscle Monday

Muscle Monday

I had a list of things I meant to do this weekend. On that list was write several blog posts I’ve been thinking over in my head. What I actually did this weekend was ride my horse, nap, read a book and drink with friends. I regret nothing. To tide you over until I can go home and do all the things tonight, here is a conformation progression of Sir Simon Pants. The change is pretty drastic at first, but…

The Immeasurable Value of Horses

The Immeasurable Value of Horses

Category wise, horses are a unique pet to have. Most of us don’t have a member of the family that is technically considered livestock. Though I jokingly call my dogs my “herd”, they are fairly universally accepted as pets in the United States. While some people do have working dogs, they become less and less common. For dogs and cats, everyone accepts their value as emotional instead of economical. Horses are less black and white though. For many of us,…

Weenie Horse & Rider Take On Cross Country

Weenie Horse & Rider Take On Cross Country

After scraping myself together for a Saturday morning lesson, I decided it would be a good idea to scrape myself for a cross country schooling day on Sunday after more wine. So bright and early, we loaded Simon up and headed out for adventure. Since we had only been jumping a grand total of two rides before schooling, I told myself that we were just going for an adventure. Normally I’d be trying to obsess over getting ALL the pictures…

Stride by Stride

Stride by Stride

I hear “one day at a time”, “one minute at a time” and “keep putting one foot in front of the other” very often. It’s one of those obnoxiously cliche things to say that is both annoying to hear but also extremely accurate. With something like this, sometimes it really is the only way to go forward. For me, the saying has morphed into something more like “stride by stride.” All my life I’ve been very conscious that I’m the…

Itchin’

Itchin’

I am itchin’ to ride my horse again. Tomorrow will be about a month since Simon’s leg blew up, and three weeks after the vet diagnosed him with a suspensory strain. Tomorrow I will hop back on for a mostly walking ride, and slowly leg him back up. He’s been rather enthusiastic in his limited turnout, with more playing & leaping than I’ve ever seen him do. Still, we took this issue very conservatively and his leg has stayed cold…

Soundtrack of Your Life

Soundtrack of Your Life

Lots of blogging about non-horse topics lately. It’s not that I no longer love my horse, but more that he isn’t doing anything exciting. We’re just waiting for one more week of restricted turnout & rest before I hop back on and see how he feels. I don’t even need to ice/poultice/wrap right now, so I’ve been a bit of a slacker horse mom and only hoof out to the barn a few times a week. When I do go…
