Insurance for the Free Gimpy Horse

Insurance for the Free Gimpy Horse

When I first acquired Simon, I made a deal with my husband that I would only have a horse if I carried insurance on it.  We’re both hard core animal lovers and bleeding hearts, and we knew that if it came down to the choice of saving my horse or going into large amounts of debt… we’d probably go into large amounts of debt.  That scared him, so I assured him that insurance was the answer. Now over a year…

Trust Your Head

Trust Your Head

I’m a helmet advocate.  That being said, when you post pictures riding without a helmet on your blog I’m not going to comment things like WEAR A HELMET YOU GD MORON or YOU DON’T DESERVE TO OWN HORSES IF YOU DON’T WEAR A HELMET!!! Some people are like that – I’m not. I recognize it’s a choice, but the choice I make is to do the best I can to protect my head.  My head keeps my husband from having…

Observations from CTHJA Summer Circuit 2

Observations from CTHJA Summer Circuit 2

This past Saturday I spent another day at the horse show cheering on friends and taking pictures.  Each summer circuit show has a special Saturday night class, and this weekend was the jumper classic.  It’s a big deal to us with a satin obsession, because they award giant beautiful neck ribbons. And who doesn’t want to win giant beautiful neck ribbons? As always, it was nice to observe the horse show from a spectator’s point of view. Some horses just…

Simon and the Sarcoid

Simon and the Sarcoid

A few months ago in late May, I noticed a scab on the outside of Simon’s front right fetlock.  He must have nicked it being Simon (because he’s constantly covered in various skin ailments and scabs and bites), and I gave no thought of it. A few days went by, and the scab was still there as well as was hard to pick off.  Weird, but it’s better not to go digging into my horse with my fingernails.  He probably…

Photography Friday – Raleigh CDI Dressage

Photography Friday – Raleigh CDI Dressage

Though we all know I’m a hunter/jumper girl, I appreciate pretty much any kind of horse show with quality horses and riders.  So when my local fairgrounds in Raleigh, NC hosted a major dressage show several years ago – I checked it out. I really think hunter/jumper shows could do with a few more flags in the background.  It makes for a nice photo backdrop! Also, how do you dressage riders get your boots so shiny? Dude, seriously. How?

Simon’s Siblings

Simon’s Siblings

As mentioned yesterday, for the purposes of my research I was pretty much only interested in Simon’s siblings from the same dam.  It’s not that his sire isn’t up to snuff, but we all know that most stallions will have gazillions of foals and it’s more common for the foal to have more characteristics of the mother. To find out this info, I pulled Simon’s dam’s pedigree up on pedigrequery.com. It turned up 4 results (including Simon), so I had…

Simon’s Sire – Earth Colony

Simon’s Sire – Earth Colony

One of the joys of having a horse that’s registered is frantically googling all of their relatives.  In the horsey family tree, only a few really matter in my opinion – Sire, Dam, any full siblings, and any half siblings from the same dam.  Luckily for me, my search for Simon came up with solid results on several of these categories! Here’s the quick facts about Earth Colony, Simon’s sire. Earth Colony (KY) B , H, foaled February 11, 1991…

Instagrams for the Hunter/Jumper Lover

Instagrams for the Hunter/Jumper Lover

Like Laura from The Roany Pony, I have a weeee  bit of an Instagram problem. I attract a lot of twelve-year-old girls to my instagram page because I publish a lot of pictures of ponies. A lot. of pictures. of ponies. Non-horsey friends think I may be borderline insane. Actually, even the horsey friends might think so too because they will also instagram the selfies, pictures of beer and tacos. Me? I pretty much play to my audience of twelve-year-old girls….
