How to Celebrate the Lame Horse’s Birthday

How to Celebrate the Lame Horse’s Birthday

I know, I know – it’s still birthday central around here.  That’s what you have to do when you can’t ride your horse… you dress him up! Yes, that is a crown.  Yes, it does have glitter.  Yes, it does say “Birthday Prince” You also stop to pose for pictures with your beloved ponykins, even though there is grain drool on your boob and it’s a bad hair day. You can try to feed him cupcakes, but there’s a good…

Soyjoy

Soyjoy

Let me start off by saying that whatever shortcomings my barn has (as all barns do!), I’ve never been around a group of nicer people.  The silver lining to Simon being hurt right now is the incredibly generous people who are letting me ride their horse.  Lately I’ve been able to ride Viper (who will get his own post later) and last night one of the good teenage riders offered her appendix mare, Joy, for me to jump around on….

Big Girl Pants

Big Girl Pants

It’s been a rather stressful week month career at work lately.  In January I was thrilled to receive a promotion, which has greatly improved my quality of life salary wise but now I am realizing that when people give you more money they expect you to do more work, and we still haven’t been able to find the right employee for me to manage and help out with my task list.  Don’t get me wrong, I still love my job…

Highs and Lows

Highs and Lows

It was another weekend of highs and lows around here, but hey – at least it wasn’t all lows! My trainer had an unfortunate fall two weeks ago and broke her leg in several places.  While she’s been resting and getting the swelling down for surgery this week, I’ve helped step up and teach some lessons at the barn.  Our boarding situation is unique (and awesome) in that group lessons are included with the price of board.  This usually equates…

Simon’s Recovery Progress

Simon’s Recovery Progress

We are past 1 month of stall rest with no hand walking, and 2.5 weeks of stall rest with hand walking.  We started out with 5 minute hand walks, and are up to 20 minutes.  Next week they are 30 minutes and then we will start with weighted walking. Since there were lots of people around the barn last night, I asked one of the teen girls to jog Simon for me so I could see his progress.  The last…

How to Survive Rehabbing the Lame Horse

How to Survive Rehabbing the Lame Horse

Rehabbing Simon back from his soft tissue strain has been an adventure, but I feel like I’m at the point where I’m not too horribly whiny and both feel good about our progress and his happiness.  Stall rest, hand walking and all that jazz isn’t super fun but I’ve developed some survival techniques that have helped me cope and make the best of the situation When you can do, you must do I feel like a lot of rehab and…

Adventures in Hand Walking

Adventures in Hand Walking

Yesterday was not a super day for me, so I was really looking forward to driving to the barn to walk Simon and hack Winston, a school horse my trainer wants me to work with some.  Instead of relaxation, I got the continuing of the bad day. As soon as I had changed from my work clothes to my riding clothes, a lesson student pulled the horse I was supposed to ride into the cross ties for her lesson.  I was peeved….

Simon is sound!

Simon is sound!

Feb 1st was 1 month after I first discovered Simon very, very lame with a hot and swollen right hock.  One week later, we had a loose diagnosis and prescription for a bute treatment and stall rest.  While I technically should have waited until Thursday of this week, he has been increasingly irritable from the stall rest and I decided jogging him in front of the barn wasn’t going to hurt anything. And he was sound! So I’m putting on my…
