Reading Round Up – March

Reading Round Up – March

One day I will have a month full of light hearted, super engaging books for you… but that month is not this month. Instead, I’m still knee deep in literary memoir and am taking y’all along for the ride with me! Not many people have had as much bad luck as I have, but not many people have had as much good luck, either. – Tig Notaro I’m Just a Person by Tig Notaro Tig, a stand-up comic and comedy…

Texas Bluebonnet Horse & Dog Portraits

Texas Bluebonnet Horse & Dog Portraits

Getting bluebonnet pictures were really important to me this year. Even though I’ve admired the amazing wildflowers in Texas for seven years now, I’ve never actually taken any kind of bluebonnet pictures. Maybe that’s because of this hilarious tumblr that makes fun of people squatting in the bluebonnets for pictures, but mostly I’ve just been lazy. Originally, the plan was to meet my roommate at a little patch of bluebonnets by our house and take some photos of the dogs….

How to Offend a Simon

How to Offend a Simon

My horse is the sterotypical sensitive Thoroughbred. He picks up on your moods, and feels every single muscle in your body when riding. These qualities can make him reactive, but because he’s such a good egg and so amateur friendly it’s rarely a problem. Still, I’ve learned over the years that less is more and if I get a little over zealous with my leg on course that he’s going to shoot out from me like a rocket. I’ve learned…

Elastic Heart

Elastic Heart

This whole “rebuilding my life” process isn’t going as smoothly as I hoped it might. Partially I blame grief, but when you grieve as long and as deep as I have it’s easy to blame grief for everything. Grief is like just getting out of the shower on a cold morning when the heat hasn’t kicked on yet, and someone throws a towel over your head. You’re wet and cold. You can’t see anything because there’s a fucking towel over your…

Happy 11th Birthday Simon!

Happy 11th Birthday Simon!

Nerd horse is turning 11 today, and for his big birthday present he’s getting… his hocks checked. Wow… I sure know how to spoil my critters. While there won’t be any kind of grand pony birthday party today, I’m taking a moment this morning to appreciate the old man. As firmly moves from an adolescent nerd horse to a mature, stately tweed-jacket-with-elbow-patches-professor kind of nerd horse, it’s hard for me to believe that this is the same creature I met…

20 Months

20 Months

I hate it when people refer to ages in weeks or months. Like why are babies “61 weeks” instead of a year? I’ll break my own rule and say it’s been 20 months since Tim died. That’s less than two years, more than a year and a half. Every month seems important, so I count them. Maybe it’s the same for weeks with babies. Maybe we measure massive growth in the most finite unite possible. It’s surprising to me how much…

Roman

Roman

My learning experience horse hauled off this morning to a new home in Colorado. He’ll be loved by really nice people and continue his path towards the hunter/jumper ring under a knowledgeable trainer. Although I’ve never bought or sold a horse sight unseen before, I feel good about his new family. I think he will be loved and cared for, which is as much as any horse can want out of life. I can’t really adequately express how relieved I…
