I almost bit it last night, for real. Was riding Winston, who is a horse that is really quite lovely and a solid citizen until something rocks his world at the canter. He has hunter/jumper PTSO from years of a rider that has somewhat harsh hands, and will throw his head violently in the air with contact. Last night we actually did some nice trot circles with him yielding to the inside rein and starting to relax in the poll – so I was really happy with that.
Then we tried to canter, and that was special. Going right I forgot his “danger corner” and when I started to take the left rein he flipped out and bucked a few strides. No big deal, I’ll just start on the left lead (his far better side) and for a few laps had a lovely canter… until he tripped. The trip scared him, and he responded to that fear by FREAKING OUT and leaping in the air several times like a cat. I was fairly sure I wasn’t going to make it, and even started to wonder if I would break the little arena fence when I got thrown onto it… but somehow I kept my fat butt in the saddle and lived to see another day.
With those two paragraphs, I have broken Wordless Wednesday. Whoops.
Now I will show you my favorite photographs from tumblr, because I love drooling over beautiful hunters and I just can’t wait to get to Wellington and try to get some good shots of my own. Have any horsey trips coming up that you’re looking forward to?
