Photography Friday – Fushimi Inari

Photography Friday – Fushimi Inari

The place I was most excited to go in all of Japan was the Fushimi Inari shrine outside of Kyoto. It’s a Shinto shrine dedicated to foxes, which the Japanese believe are messengers that connect people to the world of spirits. Fushimini Inari is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kyoto. Its path up the mountain is lined with red Tori gates, making for probably the prettiest hike you’ll ever go on when it comes to architecture. Since…

Shooting into the Sun

Shooting into the Sun

I’ve long considered myself a shamateur photographer. While I can reliably produce shots from horse shows that are marketable (in my opinion), portraits and other types are photography are a whole different ball game. I discovered a long time ago that if I wanted to get good enough to offer services as a serious professional, I needed to invest a ton of money into better equipment and countless hours into practice. When you think about doing that but see teenagers…

Photography Friday – La Jolle Cove Sea Lions

Photography Friday – La Jolle Cove Sea Lions

One time my super cool California friend took me to La Jolle Cove near San Diego, and I was surrounded by sea lions and harbor seals. This trip was made even more fantastic by three things: I listened to a This American Life episode years ago all about the cove and the battle between animal activists and beach patrons. It’s really interesting, and you can listen here. You can get close enough to touch the animals. Of course I don’t…

32 at the Zoo (or what a difference a year makes)

32 at the Zoo (or what a difference a year makes)

It seems I have developed a bit of a tradition spending my birthday around wild animals. One year of my late 20’s we went to the rescue zoo in Austin with friends. On my 30th birthday Tim took the day off of work, and told me to decide whatever it was I wanted to do. I suggested we venture out to the drive-through safari near San Antonio, although I pouted a little internally that he hadn’t come up with any plans of…

Photography Friday – A Pony at Dusk

Photography Friday – A Pony at Dusk

I need to get out and take more pictures, but lately it’s been so damn hot outside that as soon as I’m done riding I want to leave the barn. These were from a not so distant time where we didn’t see triple digits every day. I believe this pony’s name is Brownie, and he’s a camp horse and trooper for beginner riders. That day he was feeling particularly artistic with the light setting down behind him. These are straight…

Photography Friday – Puerto Rico

Photography Friday – Puerto Rico

Still getting the blog back and looking decent (right now it looks like a canned template, because that’s exactly what it is).  It’s been cold and gross here – so here are some pictures from my honeymoon… a much warmer time!

I’m back and unmotivated

I’m back and unmotivated

I’m married.  It was awesome.  I’m back now.  I’ve been back actually, just un-motivated and occupied by getting back to normal life and playing with my new pony.  So no long blog tonight, just some pictures of my critters and some horses at the farm.

Photography Friday – Texas Hill Country

Photography Friday – Texas Hill Country

I’m trying to get better about getting out and taking pictures more often.  Have way too much camera equipment to waste sitting around.  Of course, a little weekend getaway is the perfect excuse for that.  Here’s an assortment of pictures from our Labor Day weekend trip to Fredericksburg, Texas and Enchanted Rock State Park.
